Detroit

Detroit
Detroit
Michigan Central
After sitting abandoned for decades and even showing up as a backdrop in the first Transformers movie, this massive train depot was brought back to life in an incredible restoration by Ford. Today, it serves as an innovation and tech hub with modern offices, public event spaces, and local retail.

RoboCop Bronze Statue

Eastern Market
One of the oldest and largest open-air public markets in the country, packing historic sheds with local produce, street food, and vibrant murals spread across several city blocks.

Dequindre Cut
A really cool urban rail-trail tucked below the city streets, where you can walk or bike past towering street art murals on a direct path between Eastern Market and the river. The Detroit Marathon passes straight through it and then over into E Lafayette St for the last mile, which made it fun to explore it the day before and then see the runners taking it over the next morning.

William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor

MacArthur Bridge

Belle Isle
Set right between the US and Canada in the middle of the river, this giant historic island park has everything from a sandy beach and public aquarium to quiet trails and unbeatable skyline viewpoints.

Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory

William Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse

The Heidelberg Project
One of Detroit’s most unconventional landmarks, where everyday junk and salvage materials were transformed into whimsical, thought-provoking art installations across abandoned houses and front yards.

Little Caesars Arena

Google Detroit
I kind of love seeing big tech companies offices everywhere :)

The James Scott Mansion
Once one of Detroit's most famous decaying architectural ruins, this stunning 1880s stone castle in Peterboro was saved from the wrecking ball and restored into modern residences.

Brush Park Architecture
Once called the "Little Paris of the Midwest," this neighborhood is full of character today because you have restored 19th-century brick castles sharing the sidewalk with sharp, contemporary modern architecture.

Comerica Park

Fox Theatre

Woodward Ave

The BELT & The Z Garage
A downtown alleyway turned outdoor art gallery, tucked right between the two halves of a zigzagging parking garage packed with massive murals on every single level.

Microsoft Detroit

Detroit Public Library

Campus Martius Park

Stevie Wonder Mural

Buddy's Pizza
The birthplace of Detroit-style pizza, famous since 1946 for its thick, airy square crust, baked in forged-steel auto parts pans to get those legendary crunchy, cheesy edges.

Michigan Ave

Detroit People Mover
A retro elevated train looping around downtown Detroit, giving you quick hop-on hop-off transit between key spots and surprisingly great bird's-eye views of the city streets and riverfront.

Hamtramck Disneyland
An eccentric backyard art project built over decades by Ukrainian immigrant Dmytro Szylak. Perched right on top of two garages, thousands of salvaged items, toys, and spinning windmills create a surreal folk art environment.

Fisher Building
Designed by Albert Kahn, this landmark features an incredible three-story marble lobby and houses the historic Fisher Theatre right inside.

Motown Museum
The humble house where Berry Gordy launched a music empire, home to the legendary Studio A where artists like Stevie Wonder and The Supremes recorded their biggest hits.

Detroit Public Library, Institute of Arts & Michigan Science Center

Q Line
Running directly along Detroit’s main spine on Woodward Avenue, this free streetcar route connects key spots from the riverfront all the way north to New Center.

Guardian Building
Built during Detroit’s financial boom in the late 1920s, this brick skyscraper blows people away the moment they step into the lobby with its jaw-dropping Aztec-inspired tile mosaics and cathedral-like ceilings.

The Spirit of Detroit
One of the city’s most recognizable symbols, this massive green bronze figure sits holding a family and a golden orb beneath the 2 Corinthians verse carved into the wall: "Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."

Hart Plaza
A landmark riverfront plaza packed with history and public art, home to the massive Joe Louis Fist sculpture and the open spiral arch of Transcending. Standing right by the water gives you a clear view across to Canada, with the entrance to the Detroit-Windsor tunnel diving underwater right nearby.

Greektown

Detroit RiverWalk
A wide, lively walkway along the Detroit River where you can stroll right beside the water with open views of Canada and the iconic Ambassador Bridge connecting the two countries.

Parker's Alley

Michigan Building
Famous as the theater that became a parking garage, featuring grand Renaissance plasterwork decaying above parked cars. While public access inside is shut down due to building security and deteriorating ceilings, the building itself remains an iconic chapter of Detroit architectural lore.

Midtown
A beautiful historic slice of Detroit best known for West Canfield Street, featuring restored 1870s Victorian architecture along original granite-paved streets, right in the center of local boutiques and breweries.

Lafayette and American Coney Island
Standing right shoulder to shoulder downtown, these two historic spots represent a century-old sibling rivalry over Detroit’s signature coney dog, making it a classic ritual to try one from each diner back-to-back to pick a personal favorite. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of hot dogs, but I tried both and they seemed really similar to me. I'd come back to Lafayette for the simpler, better service.

Cleveland

Cleveland
Cleveland
Cleveland Hopkins International Airport

Euclid Ave
Once famous as Millionaires' Row, this historic avenue cuts straight through downtown, tying together the city's best architecture, shopping arcades, and theater district.

Cleveland Public Square
A great open downtown plaza surrounded by historic skyscrapers, and the exact spot where they filmed Loki facing off with Captain America in the first Avengers movie.

The Arcade
One of America’s first indoor shopping malls from 1890, built like an indoor street with five stories of balconies under a massive skylight.

5th Street Arcades
Directly facing The Arcade on Euclid Avenue, this connected pair of 1900s gallerias completes downtown’s "arcade district," linking the two blocks into one continuous indoor walk for local retail and food.

Playhouse Square
The country’s second-largest performing arts center after Broadway, anchored by retro neon marquees and giant illuminated district letters that make the whole avenue pop after dark.

GE Chandelier
The centerpiece of the theater district, this massive crystal chandelier hangs directly over downtown traffic and is an absolute must-see when lit up at night.

Rocket Arena
Cleveland completely lives and breathes sports. Home of the Cavaliers, this massive arena sets the tone for how serious Cleveland takes its basketball.

Progressive Field
Sitting directly beside the Rocket arena, the Guardians’ ballpark brings classic baseball energy right into the middle of the city skyline.

Hope Memorial Bridge
This bridge gives you the best skyline views in the city, but the real highlight is standing beneath the massive "Guardians of Traffic" stone figures carved into the pillars that inspired the baseball team's name. It gives the whole crossing an epic, Gotham-like feel.

West Side Market
Cleveland’s oldest public market, where you can walk through rows of local bakers and butchers under an incredible 1912 yellow-brick arch and grab breakfast or lunch on the go.

Greetings from Cleveland Mural

Ohio City

The Franklin Castle
Widely called the most haunted house in Ohio, this creepy 1880s stone mansion looks like something straight out of an old horror film sitting quietly in the middle of a residential neighborhood.

Cleveland Script Sign - Tremont

House from A Christmas Story
The actual 1895 Victorian home used for the exterior and living room shots in the 1983 holiday classic, restored to look exactly like the movie set right down to the iconic leg lamp in the front window.

Cleveland Script Sign - Edgewater Park

Edgewater Park
A massive lakefront park right on Lake Erie with a sandy beach, scenic paved trails for walking or biking, and killer skyline views back toward downtown.

Fountain of Eternal Life

Cleveland Public Library-Louis Stokes Wing

Tower City Center

Sidaway Bridge
Built in the 1930s, it once connected Kinsman and Slavic Village until it was torched during the 1966 civil rights unrest to stop Black schoolchildren from walking into the neighboring white community. Left abandoned and overtaken by nature ever since, it stands as a quiet, powerful monument to another sad chapter in the history of racial divide.

Severance Music Center

The Cleveland Museum of Art

Lake View Cemetery
A peaceful Victorian garden cemetery full of great paths and incredible monuments. It is the final resting place of President James A. Garfield, where you can walk inside a towering stone memorial with stunning mosaics and climb up for a wide view of the city.

Ballard Locks
One of the most interesting parts of my Seattle trip. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, they connect the saltwater of Puget Sound to the freshwater of the Lake Washington Ship Canal. It serves as a water level regulator, prevents the mixing of saltwater and freshwater to protect local ecosystems, and has vessel navigation chambers to help boats to navigate between the high and low levels. It also has a fish ladder to help fish to migrate between the saltwater bay and the freshwater grounds.
